The Committee on Global Thought was born out of a bold ambition: to deepen Columbia’s engagement with the world’s most pressing and complex global issues. As with the challenges facing our world, Columbia’s Committee on Global Thought cuts across disciplines.

In today’s rapidly shifting landscape, traditional academic boundaries often fall short. Understanding the forces shaping our world — from global governance and democratic change to economic inequality, digital transformation, and cultural diversity — requires fresh thinking and new frameworks rooted in global experience.

This challenge calls for more than a transnational lens; it demands a cross-disciplinary mindset. Many of the questions that define our era live between disciplines, defying neat categorization. That’s why the Committee on Global Thought facilitates collaboration across disciplines and geographical boundaries, bringing together scholars, students, and practitioners to explore the ideas that will shape the twenty-first century.

At its heart, the Committee on Global Thought is a space to push the boundaries of traditional academic thinking and scholarly inquiry — a place where global phenomena inspire new concepts, and where rigorous analysis meets real-world relevance.
