Renewing Democratic Participation

Successful democracies cannot thrive without an open and diverse civic culture. Yet, rising political and societal polarization has eroded the effectiveness of American representative democracy.
To address this challenge, Columbia World Projects has partnered with the Ash Center for Democracy at Harvard and the SNF Agora Institute at Johns Hopkins University to establish Renewing Democratic Participation. Under the initiative, a network of experts examines the critical links between the state and society: political parties, deliberative instruments, and civic associations.
Supported by a grant from the Carnegie Corporation of New York, Renewing Democratic Participation moves beyond diagnosis to generate new thinking and tangible solutions for democratic renewal.
