The Age of Polycrisis: Global Shifts and China's Role

Are interconnected crises combining to create something even more dangerous?

Across the globe, we are seeing a convergence of crises: climate change, geopolitical tensions, social instability, economic downturns, and the rapid advancement of technology. These issues form what is increasingly called a polycrisis — a term introduced by French thinker Edgar Morin and popularized by Adam Tooze, Columbia's Kathryn and Shelby Cullom Davis Professor of History, Chair of the Committee on Global Thought and the Director of the European Institute at Columbia University.

Professor Tooze will be in Beijing to to discuss the idea of polycrises with Hejuan Zhao, a pioneering figure in China’s new media industry and member of the Columbia Global Center Beijing Advisory Board. They will explore the roots, drivers, and far-reaching implications of today’s polycrisis and discuss how China’s evolving role on the global stage can be reinterpreted through this lens.

This event is co-organized by Columbia Global Center Beijing and the Committee on Global Thought and is part of the Beijing Global Center's “Navigating Globalization: The Path to Advanced Thinking” series.
