Social Impact Awards

The Columbia Global Innovation Award Request for Applications is now open! Learn more about this new opportunity, including how to apply.
Many of the most urgent societal challenges remain unaddressed because innovative, high-risk solutions often fall outside the scope of traditional academic funding.
The Columbia World Projects Social Impact Awards provide funding and a framework for projects that transform bold ideas from Columbia faculty and scholars into measurable interventions.
These awards focus on complex topics that are underserved by existing funding sources, empowering researchers to move beyond the classroom and into the field.
Award Criteria
To ensure projects translate into tangible change, all proposed projects included:
- Internal Collaboration: Projects must be led by at least two faculty members or researchers from distinct Columbia University units to ensure a multi-perspective approach.
- External Partnership: Applicants must demonstrate equitable collaborations with entities outside the university, such as government agencies, civil society organizations, or private sector partners.
- Interdisciplinary Design: The project’s development and implementation must integrate multiple fields of study to address complex global challenges.
- Scholarship and Evidence: Each initiative must clearly articulate how it will advance academic scholarship while deriving data-driven evidence for its proposed solutions.
- Measurable Impact: Projects are required to demonstrate clear outputs and outcomes that can be tracked and evaluated.
- Student Engagement: Awards prioritize the inclusion of Columbia University undergraduate students, graduate students, or postdocs, providing them with "action lab" experiences.
- Commitment to Social Justice: Every project must demonstrate a dedicated commitment to advancing gender equity and racial justice within its specific context.
