What can a single scholar see that global institutions sometimes miss? In Nairobi, a Columbia Global Scholar-in-Residence found that resilience is not a theory; it is lived daily.

Working with Kenyan partners, Dr. Craig J. Heck explored how communities adapt after crisis and what it really takes to rebuild. His reflections move between research and humanity, offering insights that challenge how we think about recovery, collaboration, and the role of a university in a changing world.

"The [residency] reaffirmed my belief that impactful global health research depends on proximity: intellectual, professional, and human. Context is everything."

Dr. Heck is a member of the 2025 Columbia Global Scholars-in-Residence Program, which places Columbia faculty at Global Centers around the world to deepen locally grounded research and expand global collaboration.
