The Columbia Global Emerging Scholars Fellowship Program provides support to displaced, early-career scholars in the humanities to help advance their success in academia

How can universities provide a lifeline for scholars whose work has been upended by conflict or crisis?

Columbia Global is proud to introduce nine exceptional individuals awarded the 2024-2025 Columbia Global Emerging Scholars Fellowship. This program supports early-career displaced scholars whose academic trajectories have been disrupted by instability in their home countries. The one-year fellowship provides critical resources to help scholars resume their research, expand professional networks, and advance their academic careers.

“We are honored to support these remarkable scholars who have demonstrated resilience and dedication in their pursuit of knowledge despite the challenges of displacement,” said Wafaa El-Sadr, executive vice president of Columbia Global. “Their work not only enriches their respective fields but also contributes to the broader understanding of displacement and the profound impacts these issues have on societies worldwide.”

This cohort’s work spans diverse topics, including the intersection of gender and culture in Yemen, digital divides and social inequalities in Chile, and advocacy for refugees in Nairobi.

This year, the program is expanding with the generous support of the Mellon Foundation. Fellows will now be hosted at Columbia Global Centers in Amman, Nairobi, and Santiago, building on the success of a four-year initiative at the Amman Global Center, which has supported 25 scholars since its inception in 2020.

The 2024-2025 Emerging Scholars cohort represents a wide range of disciplines and regions, unified by their commitment to impactful research. Over the next year, fellows will conduct groundbreaking studies with guidance from Columbia faculty mentors and engage in scholarly activities such as presentations, workshops, and roundtable discussions to address critical global challenges.

The Emerging Scholars Fellowship exemplifies Columbia Global’s mission to tackle the complexities of displacement and migration. By supporting displaced scholars, Columbia Global creates pathways for innovation and understanding, ensuring that academic potential is not lost to the disruptions of conflict.
