Perpetrators as Photographers

What can images of war reveal about perpetrator photography and the politics of memory?
In February 2026, thirteen photographs were offered for sale on eBay by a private collector. The images depicted the final moments when 200 Greek communists were executed by a Nazi firing squad at the Kaisariani shooting range on May 1, 1944.
In this seminar, hosted by Institute for Ideas and Imagination and Program in Hellenistic Studies, poet and historian Haris Vlavianos joins Hellenic Studies faculty to examine these historic images and situate them within the broader context of the Second World War and the Nazi occupation of Greece.
This event will take place in person and online.
